Gastrointestinal infections constitute a large proportion of clinical practice. There are a large number of diseases which require specialist appraisal, sophisticated investigations and special management. Due to the high morbidity and mortality in India because of gastrointestinal infections, a need for forming a society for gastrointestinal infections was felt in early 2007.
Regular symposia conducted through this society would help to enrich the knowledge of the medical fraternity with the latest professional skills and devices with respect to GI infections contributing to the larger noble aim of improving the quality of health care. It was felt that national conferences on the gastrointestinal infections should be held biennially so that the microbiologists and gastroenterologists could interact with themselves to deliberate on the newer modalities of diagnosis and treatment for gastrointestinal infections.
During the formation of the Society, Founder Members were enrolled from among the active gastroenterologists, microbiologists and scientists from related field and the society was named as Gastrointestinal Infection Society of India (GISI) and Prof. Meera Sharma, HOD, Medical Microbiology, PGIMER became the first President of the Society in 2007.
